This short story was solicited, along with 25 others by various Francophone authors, for the analgesically themed anthology Aspirin. Like much of Nothomb's work, it has the feel of fictionalized autobiography.

Aspirin

When I was a girl, to pronounce the word "aspirin" was tantamount to blasphemy. For all things medical, my mother had theories, or rather a religion. We had all been reared in the cult of homeopathy, or more specifically of a homeopath, whose name our sect's clandestine esoterism forbids me to give here. We shall call him Monsieur X. He lived in Brussels and we in Beijing, which made instruction all the more remote and sacred. All the more impractical, too. There were no faxes in the seventies, and when we were laid up with a nasty cold, mom always had to write Monsieur X a letter and would forbid us to take any remedy before our guru's response arrived via post, along with the life-saving pills. Most often, the mail took so long that nature had already cured us in the meantime.

My brother, my sister and I had understood that to suffer without remission was of no importance. The only crime would have been to swallow a medicine deemed allopathic, meaning foreign to homeopathy. Aspirin was allopathic, and thus satanic. I was at the age where I believed everything mother said. When I had a fever, I would sooner have died than take the hellspawn tablet. Horrendous headache? Big deal. The pain would eventually vanish, whereas if I were to renounce the faith by intake of acetylsalicylic acid, the horror of the sin would stain my conscience forever.

And so I reached adulthood without having so much as tried aspirin, or any other allopathic substance. I then left my parents and settled in Brussels.

One of my mother's first instructions was to meet Monsieur X at long last in the flesh, which I did piously as a Muslim going to Mecca. The Belgian guru deigned to receive the young lady of 17 who had been in his remote care from birth. I discovered, not without terror, that Monsieur X had the physiognomy of a sadistic zombie. He inquired about my habits and learned that I drank much tea. He took umbrage and forbid it. I didn't say anything, but I thought that between Chinese tea and Monsieur X, the choice was clear. I did not see Monsieur X anymore, though without falling to the heresy of seeing another doctor. I simply decided on going without medicine of any kind, to which the sluggishness of international mail had already accustomed me.

Much later, while staying at a friend's home, I had one of my innumerable nasty colds. My dear friend brought me an aspirin. I looked upon it as upon the Antichrist and cried out that I would not swallow the substance of Beelzebub. She put my abjurations down to fever, and dropped the tablet into a glass of water which she made me drink down. I had the fascinating impression of taking in evil itself in person: I discovered the first of its seductions — its acrid, bitter taste which filled me with delight. Few flavors I knew so ravished me. A bit later, a sweet and gentle torpor took hold of me and I sank into a wholesome slumber. When I awoke ten hours later, I felt better than ever.

Since then, one might say that I have become an aspirin neophyte. I love it with a wild and vengeful passion. To this day I can't take it without feeling sick for it. And now that I have learned the etymology of "salicylic" I cannot look at a willow tree without seeing in it a malign ally, the very tree of transgression, and wonder if the apple tree of the garden of Eden was not really a willow tree, weeping from its every branch the secret remedy to the aches imposed by the Eternal.


Aspirine

Quand j'étais petite, prononcer le mot "aspirine" équivalait à un blasphème. En matière de médecine, ma mère avait des théories, ou plutôt une religion : nous étions tous élevés dans le culte de l'homéopathie ou plus précisément d'un homéopathe, que l'ésotérisme de la secte m'interdit de nommer ici -- nous l'appellerons Monsieur X. Il habitait Bruxelles et nous Pékin, ce qui rendait ses enseignements d'autant plus lointains et sacrés. D'autant moins pratiques, aussi: le fax n'existait pas pendant es années soixante-dix et quand nous avions la crève, maman devait écrire une lettre à Monsieur X et nous interdisait de prendre le moindre remède avant que, par retour de courrier, nous arrivât la réponse du guru, accompagnée des pilules salvatrices -- le plus souvent, la poste avait tant traîné que la nature nous avait déjà guéris entre-temps.

Mon frère, ma sœur et moi avions compris que souffrir sans rémission n'avait aucune importance. Le seul crime eût été d'avaler un médicament qualifié d'allopathique, c'est-à-dire étranger à l'homéopathie. L'aspirine était allopathique, donc satanique. J'étais à l'âge où je croyais tout ce que maman disait : quand j'avais la fièvre, je serais morte plutôt que de prendre un comprimé démoniaque. J'avais un mal de tête épouvantable ? La belle affaire. La douleur finirait bien par s'évanouir, tandis que si je reniais la religion en absorbant de l'acide acétylsalicylique, l'horreur du péché ne s'effacerait jamais de ma conscience.

Et c'est ainsi que j'atteignis l'âge adulte sans avoir essayé la moindre aspirine ni d'ailleurs la moindre substance allopathique. Ensuite, je quittai mes parents et m'installai à Bruxelles.

L'une des premières instructions de maman consistait à rencontrer enfin Monsieur X en chair et en os, ce que pieusement je fis, comme le musulman va à la Mecque. Le guru belge daigna recevoir la jeune fille de 17 ans qu'il avait soignée à distance depuis sa naissance. Et je découvris, non sans terreur, que Monsieur X avait le faciès d'un zombi sadique. Il s'enquit de mes habitudes et appris que je buvais force thé : il s'en offusqua et me l'interdit. Je ne dis rien mais pensai qu'entre le thé chinois et Monsieur X, mon choix était fait. Je ne vis plus Monsieur X, sans pourtant sombrer dans l'hérésie qui eût consisté à voir un autre docteur. J'avais simplement décidé que je me passerais de toute forme de médecine, ce à quoi la lenteur de la poste internationale m'avait déjà accoutumée.

Bien plus tard encore, tandis que je logeais chez une amie, j'attrapai l'une de mes innombrables crèves. L'amie chère m'apporta une aspirine. Je la regardais comme on regarde l'Antéchrist et clamai que je n'avalerais pas la substance de Belzébuth. Elle mit mes abjurations sur le compte de la fièvre et jeta le comprimé dans un verre d'eau qu'elle me fit boire de force. J'eus la fascinante impression d'absorber le mal en personne: je découvris la première de ses séductions, son goût âpre et amer qui me combla de délices. Je connus peu de saveurs qui me ravirent autant. Peu après, une douce torpeur s'empara de moi et je sombrai dans un sommeil bénéfique. Quand je m'éveillai, dix heures plus tard, je me sentais mieux que jamais.

Depuis, on peut dire que je suis la néophyte de l'aspirine. Je l'aime d'une passion éperdue et revancharde, car encore aujourd'hui je ne puis ne prendre une sans avoir l'impression d'être malade pour m'en administrer. Et comme j'ai appris depuis lors l'étymologie de "salicylique", je ne puis regarder un saule sans voir en lui un allié maléfique, l'arbre même de la transgression, et je me demande si le pommier du jardin d'Eden n'était pas un saule, pleurant de toutes ses branches le remède secret aux douleurs imposées par l'éternel.
